Actually, the composition isn't bad in this one, either - the way the frame is divided up into blocks of color and pattern. The white chair block behind the head on the right side adds something, as does the crisscross mid-value wood fence occupying the upper strip of the frame. But as a portrait of Chuck, I prefer "sunglasses", asymmetrical eyebrows in this one notwithstanding. |

Yeah. I like this photo as a photo a lot. But it just doesn't feel like me, really; I look all sensitive 'n stuff. ;) |

Most of the images that came out of the 36 exposure roll I shot of Chuck on this occasion are like the sunglasses one (or even more extreme, like the beer bottle one). Chuck's a funny, enthusiastic guy and when you put him on the spot (or in front of the camera) he becomes even more so. This is quite reasonable, but our Chuckles' personality is not exclusively energetic and expansive. I think that the quiet images, rare though they may be, are just as true to him.
However, given that both the subject and mwirth don't think that this represents him, perhaps I'm missing something important. Would anyone care to speculate what a true portrait of Chuck titled "Quiet" might look like (or at least how it might differ/be related to the above)? |

mwirth:
Actually, I do think this represents Chuck pretty well (one side of him). But I prefer Sunglasses I think because it actually looks less posed. This one looks like Chuck is playing for the camera- I guess it's the facial expression. A truly serious portrait of Chuck might be obtained by a candid shot. Or something like that rear view mirror one Chuck posted a while back. |

I don't think he'd be looking at the camera, in a quiet shot that would seem 'real.' When Chuck's looking at you he's usually engaged and not terribly quiet and often is brandishing a water bottle. |

This one is my favorite of the series, actually. I like the slow, introspective quality to his expression, and for some reason, it doesn't seem particularly posed to me. Chris, Laura's comment makes me think you should do portraits of our apartment, preferably with the lately-omni-present squirt bottle. ;) |
