mwirth: sounds evoke the surreality experienced by people as they listened to this news report.. or bits of ancient radio discovered by an uncomprehending advanced alien civilization.. the subject of JFK's assassination is one that has been done many times, but the "firecrackers" theme/ fact that it was "unconfirmed" at this point and hope still remained that he would live, makes for a different perspective.

eppy: Thanks. Yeah, I actually found this LP of archival and interview footage about the assasination, and I was going to use bits of it across a whole ambient/instrumental album. Would that be overkill? I was worried that it might be too cliched, too. Presumably most tracks would not use whole long bits of it as I do here, but more little snippets. (Although I'd LIKE to use whole long bits. Guess it wouldn't be good, though.)

sprice: I'm curious-- how did you get the electric tones, the ones that (I think) start the piece?

eppy: Everything in the right channel, the synth tones, were made on Reaktor, some of it routed through a Kaoss pad, and played on an Oxygen8 for its MIDI knob-tweaking wonderfulness. I think I was using a three-osc moog softsynth for this, and I put all the pitch knobs at their highest and turned 'em down slowly. The stuff in the left channel is mostly slide guitar.

laura: I'm with Rat on the different perspective note; the announcer's out-of-breath shock is riveting, though we know that yes the president is dead. On using these clips all the way across an album, I'm intrigued by the idea but worry that it would deaden the effect. I'm also coming at this from a theatre perspective, and that makes me ask what the point would be. What would the album have to say, what's the so what? Are you thinking of a progression from the firecrackers to Johnson's swearing-in, to the funeral, to Ruby shooting Oswald? Or to the '90s, and Clinton invoking Kennedy? Or something completely different? : )
