xanthi: You're making me homesick.... :-)

tom: You're a Yinzer?

alecia: I love how the multitude of different-era and -style bridges (suspension, highway, arches, etc) creates a layer effect. Not necessarily layers of bridges, but layers of years and time and people using the river for different purposes. You've also captured the light really beautifully.

cfanjul: this is absolutely gorgeous. i wonder though if it would be better without the bridge in the foreground, since it's darker (when the image first loaded in my window, i only saw the top bridges, and was blown away). also: what's the techincal side of this - digital camera?

tom: The one thing that kept me from cropping the bottom bridge is the reflection on the water next to the leftmost pier. The original image is larger than this one (and quite high resolution as well), so if anyone wants to mess with it, they can grab it from here.

The camera is a Minolta DIMAGE 7i, a five megapixel digital camera with 7x optical zoom (used to full effect in this photo). It has a nice lens and other good qualities, but the images it makes can be a bit noisy. The link above has more specifications on the camera than the manual. The exposure time for this photo was maybe a third to a half of a second.

cutler: A third to half a second exposure time? Wow. . . that's really slow. Did you hand hold it or did you have a tripod?
The composition and subject matter are wonderful, but the thing that really makes this image for me is the warm quality of the light. I'm guessing that there was a pretty nice sunset happening behind you as you took this.

tom: I did have a tripod. There was a good sunset that evening, but by the time I took this photo, it was already behind the ridge I was standing on!

Looking more closely at the image, this may have been a shorter exposure than I first said (judging by the lack of smearing of the cars). I did take a longer shot, but I think I ended up deleting it in favor of this one. There are actually some four second exposures in the same directory in the archive. My tripod is really lightweight, however, so for best effect it is necessary to shoot on a calm day, which the 11th was not.
