[ 1 ] cgroom: What would happen if you cropped out everything to the left of and below this point? You simplify the picture, making it a bit more abstract but maybe even stronger.

[ 2 ] samira: What about cropping everything below here? I really like the lower burst of light, as well as the setting to the left...

tom: The archive in question, btw, is available at http://www.skein.org/~tss/. For those who haven't been there for a while, there is a new fancy-pants interface that simplifies browsing enormously.

xanthi: I love the texture of this piece; the reflection of the clouds, the feeling evoked by the approach of dawn (?), the sharpness of the lower left-hand corner with the warm red-brown contrasting the cool blues. Because of the brightness of the reflection in the lower right hand corner, though, I can't help but thinking that there are, in fact, two lights featured in this picture.

sprice: I agree with Xanthi's commendation, and I think that's why I would prefer the picture as it is to the cropped idea that Chuck mentions. I think it would be neat to try it cropped, but I think having that extra bit of context, the homes and the additional sunset and the street lights, makes the starkness, and the blueness, of the corporate building that much stronger. At the same time, the reflected streetlight in the lower right distracts me.

tom: Thanks for the notes, everyone... It's interesting to hear how people parse this scene visually. You might be interested to know that the photo was taken in the evening after sunset. This means that the bright light on the bottom right is actually a streetlamp across the street--the same one giving that yellow cast to the fronts of the houses! I tried to find an angle for the photo that didn't reflect it, but was unsuccessful. I even tried to crop it out, but it didn't look right. I'm glad people look at it and don't think "streetlamp", in any case :-)
