Author's Note:

I came to Skein as a Swarthmore friend of the founders. I've since strayed far, and fallen out of touch with a lot of people, but I'm still making art. For two years after gradutating from Swarthmore in '99, I taught English in a little town in Far Eastern Russia. It was an amazing, life-changing experience. After that, I worked in a residential treatment center for disturbed adolescents in Arlington, MA. Though I sometimes joked that my job description was "human punching bag" I learned so much by working there. Since then, I've been working in college Financial Aid. It started as a Random Office Job(tm), but looks like it might become a career, eclipsing the graduate program it was intended to fund.

In the artistic realm, since college I have switched from poetry to songwriting as my main artistic outlet. I've been playing at open mics around the Boston area for the last couple of years, and have a cd available under the stage name of Lisa Locke.

This is the first chapter of my book. If you've already seen it, you'll notice the names have been changed for a public forum, and I've saved some characters for later. I hope to actually do something with this. All comments appreciated.

This is the introduction to my... uh... book?... about my experiences in Eastern Russia. I haven't progressed beyond where I was at the end of December, but maybe getting it "out there" for feedback will get me revising and moving forward.
