Hard to tell from the JPG compression, but this guy does not look happy on the ride...

More inside

Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, 27 December 2002 (Modified 08 Oct 2003 10:46 pm) ; 10 comments

The old Chain of Rocks Bridge once bore Route 66 over the Mississippi. Now the giant truss span is a footbridge. Inside the tall, slender, massive steel truss, the bridge through a zoom lens reminds me of a cathedral.

"Ball? Ball! Wall? Wall?" Feet? Feet!, 29 November 2002 (Modified 13 Dec 2002 8:13 pm) ; 3 comments

Another one for your amusement--a sculpture entitled "Ball? Ball! Wall? Wall!" at St. Louis's Laumeier Sculpture Park, with my sister on top. In blatant violation of park rules, I might add, but I'd be there too if I didn't have the camera. From the latest installment in the archive...

CMU Mine Mapping Project logo, 17 November 2002 (Modified 20 Nov 2002 7:51 pm) ; 13 comments

The Robotics Institute is making robots that map the insides of abandoned mines. This technology may reduce the number of incidents like the one that trapped the miners in Western PA at the end of last summer. This is my logo for the project.

Two more pictures of Pittsburgh for general perusal.

poetry

Leaf poem, 26 September 2002 (Modified 25 Oct 2002 5:48 am) ; 24 comments

Fall is slowly advancing here, and I've been thinking about moist days and the smell of leaves.

Allegheny bridges, 15 September 2002 (Modified 23 Sep 2002 7:21 am) ; 7 comments

A photo of bridges over the Allegheny. This is one of my favorites from the archive--it's from the same set as the last image I took. OK, no more until the at least the next photography outing, I promise!

One light, 11 September 2002 (Modified 18 Sep 2002 7:28 am) ; 6 comments

Not a great picture, but interesting perhaps. I suppose it could be an inspirational poster with "PERSEVERENCE" written under it, though "DEAD END JOB" could fit about as well. Once again, I advertise my my image archive for many more photos...

Pictures of California and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 24 July 2002 (Modified 07 Aug 2002 1:43 am)

Once again, a prose item which is not prose. Those who are interested in robots, space exploration, or Pasadena might like this collection of images I've been taking with my digital camera.

Now with pictures of Yosemite and Big Sur!

Tom's Mango Story, 29 June 2002 (Modified 29 Jun 2002 11:03 pm)

Please select my name above for my own (member access only) bit on mangoes. I'm doing it this way because I don't want search engines to index it.

Result of Movie In Two Hours, 28 April 2002 (Modified 29 Apr 2002 8:16 pm) ; 2 comments

This is not a prose submission; it contains a link to the results of Movie In Two Hours. Check it out if you like 100 MB downloads...

CFK Bucket--as it appears on the shirt, 28 April 2002 (Modified 28 Apr 2002 10:47 am) ; 1 comment

Sorry to spam Skein with this. Some of you expressed interest in having a CS T-shirt this year, and I thought you should know that this is what the bucket will look like. The shirt is black, and the only two colors are white and black. The bucket will be small and appear on the front of the shirt; the back will contain other humor. E-mail friedler@cs for info and (perhaps?) orders.

CFK Extra Tasty Crispy!, 18 April 2002 (Modified 19 Apr 2002 6:37 pm) ; 5 comments

It's CS t-shirt time. This might get a laugh out of anyone who's been through Swat CS...

SCCS Media Lounge Provisional Ad 1, 25 December 2001 (Modified 15 Jan 2002 8:46 am) ; 5 comments

An ad for the new SCCS Media Lounge in Clothier, one of a first few that are fairly minimalistic. Track the development at http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/~tss/Ads/ ... chances are they'll become more baroque over time.

Untitled (the story about Josh Pearson), 09 November 2001 (Modified 15 Nov 2001 10:28 am)

Real Coders hack the interstate system. This short story (which isn't all that great) is about a person I knew in elementary school. Naturally he didn't do what the story describes, but in other respects he is the same person.
