Death Bars

Ingredients:

  • Crust:
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 cup quick-rolled oats (e.g. Quaker Instant...)
    • 3/4 cup brown sugar
    • 1/2 tsp soda
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 3/4 cup butter, melted. I'm talking about REAL butter here, packed with animal product and sodium.
  • Filling
    • 1 cup (6 oz) milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
    • 3/4 cup carmel, the kind you buy for ice cream topping.
    • 3 Tbl. flour

Steps:

In large bowl, combine all ingredients for crust. Blend well with mixer (or, if you're poor and living in a small apartment in Berkeley, two forks will suffice) to form crumbs. Press half this conglomeration into the bottom of an ungreased 11x7 inch pan and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Remove from oven. Sprinkle with chocolate and pecans. Blend the carmel and flour and spread it over the chocolate and pecans which are, at this point, sprinkled on top of the butter-flour-oatmeal mixture. THEN sprinkle all this with the remaining crust mixture. Bake 15 or 20 minutes until the top is golden browon. Chill 1 or 2 hours, vigorously guarding against the onslaught of the hoards. Cut.
